Orientation

The Department of Neuroscience also has a Student Mentor Program. If you are interested in participating as mentor or if you are a new student looking for a senior graduate student mentor, please contact Rami Halabi (rhalabi[at]ucalgary.ca).

In the fall, the HBITO Orientation committee organizes Neuro0 - an introductory neuroscience crashcourse for new graduate students to prepare them for the Neuro 1 and Neuro 2 courses. Neuro 0 gives new neuroscience students a review of basic neuroscience concepts, as well as an introduction to topics covered in the Neuro 1 course. This year the event will be held after the first Neuro 1 class, on September 9 from 11am – 4:30pm in HSC 1405B. Topics covered will range from nervous system cell types and neuroanatomy to synaptic physiology and neurodevelopment (schedule attached). This year Neuro 0 will branch away from purely scientific talks, with additional presentations from senior graduate students discussing program requirements and life as a neuroscience graduate student in Calgary. Refreshments and a BBQ lunch will be provided during the event. As a reminder, this event is compulsory for all new neuroscience students (eg. any students who started their program between January – September 2014), although all others are welcome to attend.

Download the current schedule. Please contact the orientation committee head, Nicole Burma (neburma[at]ucalgary.ca) if you are interested in teaching or attending the lectures.
